Meet the Maker

I'm Emma the creator of ceramics at Wood and Clay Studio.

I love using the pottery wheel to make unique one of a kind pieces where no two are exactly the same. The creation of something out of a lump of clay that is formed into something symmetrical gives me great joy.

I began my ceramic journey in 2019 where I immediately fell in love with the process.

I use glazes that i layer to create movement in each piece. The female form is as inspiration for a lot of my work, as you can tell from my site.

Making

Making

All pieces are individually made on the potter's wheel.

Once I have thrown each piece, I then leave it to dry for 12 hours. When is then leather-hard it can be turned. This creates the final shape and where I add the foot of the piece. The turning process takes up to 30mins to be done right, I then smooth it with a metal rib so it feel smooth to the touch.

Bisque firing

When the pot has dried for up to a week it gets fired to 1048ºC. During this firing, the clay gets firm and removes the water to have a porous surface to then glaze.

Glazing

I brush on my glazes. It's time-consuming, each piece needs a minimum of three coats allowing each coat to try before doing the next. Some of my multi coloured pieces can have up to 10 coats of various glazes applied, which is a labour of love.

I allow the pots to dry after glazing for 12-24 hours.

Glaze firing

Stacking the kiln is a tricky process making sure each piece isn't touching. I fire my ceramics between 1200ºC and 1220ºC, so the clay vitrifies and is then waterproof. Depending on how many pieces there are in the kiln, the firing can take up to 15 hours. The cooling process takes another 18-24 hours, this is the excruciating time where you must withhold the urge to peek as you can only open the kiln when it is at 60ºC. Finally you see your work in it's beautiful glory.

Product Care

My pottery is technically dishwasher safe as it high fired, however as these are made by hand I suggest to wash by hand to retain the bright colours of the glaze.

Not oven or microwave safe.
